SYNOPSIS : This first documentary devoted to Canadian-born star Jonathan Frid covers the fascinating life and career of the Shakespearean actor, who became a TV icon in the role of vampire Barnabas Collins on the gothic daytime serial, 'Dark Shadows.' Frid’s portrayal was a key reason the series, which ran from 1966 until 1971, became must-see TV for 20 million daily viewers and has been cited as a key influence for contemporary genre films and series such as 'Twilight', 'True Blood' and 'The Vampires Diaries'.
Frid’s characterization of a vulnerable, guilt ridden monster was forged by his training at RADA in London, Lorne Greene Academy of Radio Arts in Toronto and the Yale School of Drama. This biography of a popular actor evolves into a love letter for the performing arts, exemplified by a man whose devotion to his craft became the driving force in his life.

This is an outstanding piece of work, not only illustrative of a great actor, but a fascinating era of television broadcasting. The documentary is rich in rare photographs, classic film clips, and a plethora of interviews with Mr. Frid’s closest associates. This fast-paced work will also be of interest to any aspiring actors. Very compelling, well-written, and beautifully presented. Highly recommende!
Captivating film! Congratulations to the director and her team!
An honest and thorough illumination of a talented, complex man gathered from family members and others who knew him throughout the diverse segments of his fascinating life. “Dark Shadows and Beyond - The Jonathan Frid Story” is a must for not only the fans who remember him as vampire “Barnabas Collins” but also for anyone who might appreciate the tale of a man in search of a quiet career in the dramatic arts who suddenly and serendipitously finds himself thrust into the public eye of twenty million insatiable admirers. While those who revered him and his work will never forget him, the photos, interviews and film footage in this wonderful documentary will refresh and enhance their delight anew.
It's a great documentary. I appreciate the way it treated Frid as a whole person. Despite having Dark Shadows in the title, it really gave you a picture of his entire life.
This documentary is a sincere, charming look at the Shakespearean actor who became an unlikely heartthrob in his 40s as the vampire Barnabas Collins on "Dark Shadows." Though a 30-plus year obsessed fan, I learned a lot. Highly recommended, and not just for uber fans of the 1960s daytime drama.
